Can anything be done about the bandwidth usage of these WUs?
They use in one day what the old ones used in one month!

My monthly limit would be used in 4 days :(

I guess I'll be back to try the next batch of new WUs :)

These shouldn't be using any more bandwidth than the last WUs. They're all working on the same data and i only made slight tweaks to the input file. What file is taking up all the bandwidth?

I mean upload and download bandwidth. The WU download size was 0.8 MB, the Result upload size was 1.34 MB for a total of over 2 MB. The unit ran for just over 20 minutes. That adds up to 3,000 MB per day (or 90,000 MB per month) for 21 threads from three computers.
The old WUs took up to 24 hours to finish and the upload was 6 MB. That adds up to 126 MB per day (or 3,780 MB per month) for 21 threads. Hughesnet satellite internet gives me 14,000 MB per month.
If the WUs start taking longer as more are done then things will get better soon.

Some GPU apps will work as you think they should and others you need to do the following:
If in Simple View click View then Advanced View.
From Advanced View click Options then Computing Preferences...
In the dialog that opens change "Use at most ____ % of the CPUs" from 100 to 87.5.

Don't think anything needs fixing, just an observation.

Your new calculation that extends the WU deadline to a nice date, I think, also will cause newly assigned WUs to run before a WU that was assigned many days ago.

I noticed this when an almost finished older WU (deadline was well into June) was paused so a newly downloaded WU with a deadline date of a couple days away could start.

So this seems like something weird may be afoot. Any chance you could link me the work units you aborted? Or if you see these again let me know the work unit so I can take a deeper look and see what's going on? There may be some kind of bug going on that's making them run significantly longer than they should.

You can see his WUs by clicking above on his "name", then "view" computers then "tasks" then "error".

Here is one of mine: http://csgrid.org/csg/workunit.php?wuid=979996
If I remember right it started by "Remaining (estimated) = less than one day. When I aborted, the wingman had finished long before and the "Remaining" was greater than one day and counting up not down.

There were quite a few cows in that pasture and we didn't want the camera equipment to get ruined.

At another nest we had cows wreck the camera set up.

I pictured in my mind a protective set-up for your cameras.

I should give you my easy and inexpensive to make design, it would keep the camera safe from a ten pound rock falling from 300 feet! One time it got hit by a rock and tumbled down a 50 foot blasted rock cliff. Reminded me of this video because the camera was still recording when it was retrieved. The tripod was completely wreaked but we continued using the camera and protective housing :)

I think on almost every video, at least the long ones, Chrome (up to date) stops before the end of the video. It is so close to the end that, if it is happening to others, they may not notice.

I have received no indication of "errors" on my list of completed events

I suspect that no one has received any "errors". A possible validator issue? Or maybe the new Accuracy policy?

Plus or minus 20 seconds on a 2, 3 or 4 hour video will not make any significant difference

I agree with this but the last I heard, maybe 6+ months ago, we have to be within ten seconds of each other to validate.

When a grouse leaves the nest, do we mark the time (a few seconds) we see them walking away from the nest area until they are off camera?

With the very long videos, I have trouble moving back to the beginning of an event. To get within a minute is hard. Each event marked within a video is very time consuming if you want to be within twenty seconds accuracy.
If someone at Wildlife wants a few seconds of walking away from the nest marked as an event, they will have to do it themselves and I will try to do as many videos as they do. It is just too hard to move around in these long videos.

As far as "Tags" go, they said they would like them but they are not necessary for validation.
10) Message boards : Number Crunching : How many cores will one WU use? (Message 2693)
Posted 19 Apr 2014 by GLeeM
After ten months of being fairly active here, I finally got some WUs!

How did I miss that the WUs will use more than one core? I have one WU running and it is using up to 65% of my eight core i7 920. When I run two WUs they use almost everything. When three are running I suspect my two GPUs are not being fully fed.
These do not behave like a Yafu@Home multi-core WU, where one uses 100% of the CPU.

Travis or Kyle - do we have a suggested way of running these WUs?

Your WUs do not play nice with other project WUs. They are stealing cycles :)

I think Susan wants me to not put that information on the webpages. Will ask her in our weekly meeting next tuesday.

The nest number doesn't have to be the radio collar frequency, it could be any unique identifier.

If she doesn't want the frequency given out you will have to change the file path name as it is available to the world by right-clicking on the video player and selecting "Copy video path" or "copy video URL" and pasting it in a document like so:
http://wildlife.und.edu//share/wildlife/watermarked/oil_development/2012/sharptailed_grouse/Blaisdell/148.573_predation/6-5-12_148573/CH00_20120607_145339MN.ogv

I bolded the frequency.

There is something wrong with this video clip - it looks like it was made blurry on purpose like when they make someones face blurry to protect their identity. It may be that something happened during compression that caused this, could someone look at the original uncompressed video please?

Also, and this is very important, I suspect that some sort of "Image Stabilization" is being used on the camera. If so, please turn it off in the future! It severely degrades the resolution of moving things (your camera is mounted well enough that you don't need any other kind of Image Stabilization)

Posted 13 Feb 2014 by GLeeM
clicking the next video button will attempt to show the video that comes after the current one, if possible.

After a dozen clicks on "Next" I have not gotten the next video. It is not working like it should.

It jumps all over several days back and forth, * I think at the same nest.

* can't be sure because you haven't added the radio collar number to the file name like you promised :)

http://volunteer.cs.und.edu/wildlife/tdesell/top_bossa_users.php?sort_by=total_events

This page in not opening.

If you leave an empty event it'll get marked.

So if I leave for two months and come back to watch a video I will get the same video I left two months ago. Won't that video already be watched by someone else and be done with? Will I be marked "Invalid" even though I didn't watch it? If so there should be a "Finish" button along with a "Next" button.

1. According to the video selection site there are a lot of available hours for the grouses, but clicking on watching video all three locations give back only the "No unvalidated videos"-message... What's up here?

Try going into BOINC Wildlife preferences and change the video length to longer. Make sure to also update Wildlife from BOINC Manager.

Welcome back!

a whole lot of wasted viewing time when this happens ...

I think Travis said that events are reported to the server as you enter them. So they are not lost when you get an error when you go to the next video.

If you meant the time lost by not getting another video to watch because of the error then yeah time is wasted!

I had the same problem with editing the end time, I put the correct end time in the comment field.

Also the tooltips show in the upper left corner, not by the button.
