1) Message boards : Number Crunching : All my Mac OS X WU failing (Message 2477)
Posted 7 Jan 2014 by Profile PinkPenguin
2 out of 11 MAC OS X work units validated. It seems they are valid only if the same task was run other MAC OS X PCs. If the wingman has a Linux box MAC OS X WUs (and sometimes all WUs) get marked invalid with the message: "Too many results (may be nondeterministic)".

My Linux box was more consistent it returned 10 valid WUs out of 14. The WUs in error returned the same message. In this case there is no clear pattern to the valid WUs apart from the fact that they were all Linux boxes (mixed AMD / INTEL and even mixed 32-bit/64-bit). If one of the Wingmen was a MAC OS X unit the MAC OS X unit was marked invalid when the linux units were marked valid...

At a glance it seems like Linux machines have a better chance on this project... ;-)

Thanks, Kyle. Looks like the WUs with the tag are validating now.

Looks like I goto a few test WUs (all OS X - on v10.9 Mavericks installs) . Doesn't seem to be able to validate the WUs and I would be curious to know the meaning of the error message... Hope this helps... ;-)

Here is the output:

Posted 17 Sep 2013 by Profile PinkPenguin
Any update on this? It's nine days now and still no plovers... ;-)

I'm converting the data, however I'm still waiting on Susan to give me the okay to release it for streaming. We have some federal agency issues to take care of.

I see the Plovers have been nesting in the Fed again ...Bernie won't be pleased, I'm sure!
5) Message boards : Image and Video Discussion : Questionable Validator Logic (Message 1461)
Posted 30 Aug 2013 by Profile PinkPenguin
I think Senilix already raised the question in this thread: http://volunteer.cs.und.edu/wildlife/forum_thread.php?id=261 and it looks like TRavis will deal with it.

the headers start with "Interesting". not the same order as the response form. This means that "Bird Absence" is fifth from left not fourth as one might expect.

I would like to discuss this video:

This has probably already been noted - but just in case.

What puzzles me is that the video has validated there are two opposing observations and an uncertain Presence/Absence observation - Why is the validator giving Lemon Right and PinkPenguin wrong... there should be at least one other observation to confirm either Lemon or PinkPenguin.

On reviewing the video I think I would agree with Senilix's markup on this more than my own (having seen other similar videos I might give Lemon the benefit of the doubt). But this is about validator logic and not which observation is right.

Lemon CANONICAL x x x ✓ x x x x x x 180
Senilix VALID x x x ? ? x x x x x 135
PinkPenguin INVALID x x x x ✓ x x x x x 135
7) Message boards : Image and Video Discussion : Invalid back to Valid Video's ? (Message 1455)
Posted 29 Aug 2013 by Profile PinkPenguin
Should I just remove it from the top lists and forums?

Well, it doesn't bother me much if it is showed or not and my watching behaviour did only change a little bit, so I leave it to you guys... ;-)

I think it is fine to display it, and like DoctorNow, I haven't changed my viewing habits because of it. I know that the vast majority of my Invalids are not the result of marking videos incorrectly, but because I take comprehensive notes and therefore often know whether the parent is on the nest or not while everyone else just marks Too Dark (Video Problem now). I'm not about to dumb down my video marking just to maintain a high accuracy rating.

Leave it and the badges that have already been created. It'll be fun to see if I can get my accuracy rating above 95%... don't let's take ourselves too seriously... ;-)

I think your accuracy rating is one of the highest on the board so I don't think you have to worry about losing out on that score... I do, however, think that you have to report what you actually see and not what you know to be there or what your notes tell you should be there. This is about observation and not about deduction. I would leave the latter to Susan and her team.

Observation can be informed and intelligent but one has be able to show that the video contains the evidence to support the observation.
8) Message boards : Image and Video Discussion : Invisible chick becomes visible (Message 1437)
Posted 29 Aug 2013 by Profile PinkPenguin
I would like to discuss this video:

Here is Senilix's comment: "I think there's a chick in the nest, best seen at 1:33 when it's moving"

Reviewing this reported video I think Senilix is right here and should be awarded the points for a VALID response. Unfortunately neither Lemon nor myself saw this first time round so he is marked as INVALID while Lemon and myself are VALID.

Not being able to change one's observation is frustrating - I don't want points/credits as those should be awarded only for the first time round. But it would probably be helpful to Susan if one could change one's mind on reviewing watched videos or, maybe, simply adding a comment to reported videos at least.

I honestly think that we are exagerating by adding yet another badge for accuracy. The feathers for video watching are fine and fun as a reward for work done but accuracy should be configured to be simply a number which allows us to see how much we agree on what we see and as an indicator as to how well we are observing the videos. It should not the subject of badges and the competitive aspect should be downplayed to keep it balanced.

To this end I think accuracy should be based solely on positive or negative observations (any "Unsure" responses or "Video Problems" should have no impact on accuracy as they simply imply that accuracy is not possibile. A meaningful algorithm should be based on the single observation (8 for each video) and the number of responses to each observation and not the whole video (which, to me, is another issue). In more than one of the videos I have noted 2 people respond in exactly the opposite way to 2 others... in this case both responses are equally accurate or inaccurate.

I do like GleeM's request for the date watched on each of the watched videos (this would help in addition to the ability sort by most recent which has been implemented).

Apparently the CANONICAL reply is UNSURE for Bird Absence... as Steve says it's a hard one to call.

Thanks for the tip Lemon.
12) Message boards : Image and Video Discussion : Both Parents on or off the screen ? (Message 1400)
Posted 27 Aug 2013 by Profile PinkPenguin
I would like to discuss this video:

...interesting I saw one parent enter as the other left (both on screen). Lemon wasn't sure and Senilix saw both parents off-screen for a split second... I am going to have to watch this again. [Look for changeover at 0:39] one would need to advance one frame at a time to see this...
13) Message boards : Image and Video Discussion : Marking Video to Dark (Message 1279)
Posted 24 Aug 2013 by Profile PinkPenguin
I am still marking things Too Dark if I can't make out anything in the video. Sometimes I mark Too Dark and someone else marks Unsure - I suspect that there is a fair bit of overlap between the two as it can depend on watching conditions as has been pointed out.

I am only using Unsure of a specific box seems ambiguous. For example you may see something that looks like a chick or that might be interpreted as nest defence but it is not clear. I will go back to the sharp-tailed thingy's soon and see if this holds for them as well.

I would suggest that Too Dark = Unsure would probably be a fairly simple and valid rule to implement.

The colours are great. makes it clearer.

I agree with Steve's comment on moving the Too Dark & Camera Error Buttons away from the comment box - I have made the same mistake.

Makes me pay attention more... not really slowing me down at all but then I am not fast in in the first place.

Looks like some good work has been done over the last few weeks - I like the heads up on the video page and the possibility to review and report watched videos is great and the badges have come up fine. Thanks Travis & Co.
18) Message boards : Image and Video Discussion : Is smaller bird outside nest a chick or companion bird of some sort? (Message 776)
Posted 28 Jul 2013 by Profile PinkPenguin
I am no expert but I would have marked it as a chick. It looks like one, if a rather large one, and seems to move like one. I don't think parents would tolerate anything else that close to the nest.

I note that there are 3 unhatched eggs in the nest but there is no reason they should all hatch at the same time.

This URL should work:
http://wildlife.und.edu/share/wildlife/streaming_2/missouri_river_project/piping_plover/N334/8-03-2012_N334/CH00_20120728_172316MN_CHILD3.mp4
19) Message boards : Image and Video Discussion : Fake egg hatching try (Message 763)
Posted 27 Jul 2013 by Profile PinkPenguin
Earlier videos of this nest showed 4 eggs (if I counted right). By now I have seen a lot of these videos though I haven't made notes I can remember videos around the 28/7 with one or two chicks (can't remember seeing 3 chicks and certainly not 4). During and after the 29/07 the parent continues to return to the nest and seems unsure about the egg but still tries to incubate it by late 31/7 or certainly by 1/08 the nest appears deserted and the egg remains unattended...

Seems natural that the parent will still try to incubate if there is a chance the egg will hatch but at a certain point it will realise that that won't work and it will give up.

I guess people are watching the Plover Videos, after a few that I was 1'st I started running into some that had a Wingman to Validate them ... ;)

I'm watching the Plover videos and getting the same thing - specially when I get bored with Grouse which is frequently...

I had some Photos of them that I Posted in a Forum several Years ago, I'll see if I can find which Box their on & Post them. It costs me between $700-$1500 a Month to run them.

Doesn't sound cheap to me... ;)
