1) Message boards : News : different video segment lengths (Message 1799)

Would like to know this myself, the 1'st one I looked at took me probably 10 Min's but I think I got it right but when I submitted it the Wingman had it wrong, the Bird left but they didn't catch it ...

Yeah, that was me. It was my first long video and I didn't realize it, so I zoomed through it at almost 7 times the rate I should have. Now that I know there are varying length videos, I'll make sure I go through them at the appropriate speed so that things like that don't slip past me.

Now that we are getting videos of different lengths - 20 minute, 10 minute, and so on, I was wondering if being accurate on a 20 minute video counted the same as being accurate on a 3 minute video.

In reality, I also mark Parent Present if the bird is on-screen and seems obviously connected to the nest.

As for grouse videos, there are times when the hen is on-screen but not on-nest. Mostly this occurs when the hen is cleaning up eggshells after a predator attack.
4) Message boards : Image and Video Discussion : Parent Returning ? (Message 1764)

Well I'll mark it that way but not sure how others will mark it, Thanks ... Here's how it ended up

Senilix 75% 135 x x ✓ ✓ ✓ x x x x x
Hen returns at 0:10
[AF>France] Philippe06121966 87.5% 157.5 ✓ x x ✓ x x x ✓ x x
branjo 75% 135 x x x x ✓ x x x x x
DoctorNow 100% 180 x x x ✓ x x x x x x
STE\/E 100% 180 x x x ✓ x x x x x x

And now that I've looked at the preceding video, I feel that I was wrong. I thought I saw the hen present at the beginning, but it wasn't the hen I was seeing.

The correct marking should be as you originally stated - Parent Absent, Parent Returns, and Parent Present.

(It's nice to know I'm human)

The hen is present at the nest at the very beginning of the video and merely inches its way a bit closer. IMO, the correct marking is Parent Present.
6) Message boards : Image and Video Discussion : A bird present on video or the parent present in the nest (Message 1755)
Posted 28 Sep 2013 by Profile Lemon
This video is from shortly after the camera was placed. The hen is still nervous about the camera's presence and is striving to stay out of view. The hen finally gets fully on the nest about 17:20.

Parent Present would be the proper marking for this video.
7) Message boards : Image and Video Discussion : Strange dark video validation (Message 1750)
Posted 27 Sep 2013 by Profile Lemon
My take is that you and a few others watched this video (and marked it Too Dark) at a time when
1) Chick Presence did not exist yet, or
2) this was right after implementing Too Dark and there was an error in not setting all fields to Unsure.

I don't think option 2 can be correct as I believe that all fields default to Unsure (=0).

So, going back to option 1 (this was all before my time), it would appear that when Chick Presence was implemented, it was initialized to No for all existing observations.

It isn't fair that you should receive less credit/accuracy for an issue that is not under your control. Perhaps Travis would be so kind as to reset Chick Presence to Unsure if Video Error is True.

EDIT: Travis beat me to it.

Neat - now I can start looking through videos for review without coming across the same ones over and over.

I like it!
9) Message boards : Image and Video Discussion : Still something wrong with Validator? (Message 1737)
Posted 26 Sep 2013 by Profile Lemon
Personally I think the way the Video's are being Validated now are slanted more towards the People that Mark Unsure. I've had a lot of Video's since the New Validation Process start that I know I marked correctly Yes or No Bird Present but because 2 People Mark Unsure their the one's that get 180 Credit's & 100% Accuracy while I get something less than 180 Credits & 100% Accuracy.

If you marked it correctly, you can Report the video. If the reviewer agrees with you, you will end up with full credit and accuracy.

Because of that, I think the new validation system is biased against viewers who use Unsure. If someone has marked Unsure while two other people mark either Yes or No (in agreement with each other), I think it would be much less likely for the Unsure viewer to get a reviewer to agree that the video should be marked Unsure.

And as things change, there is always the possibility in the future that Canonicals with Unsure markings will automatically be sent to the reviewers.

Nevertheless, if someone is really not sure about something, it is better (from the science point of view) to mark Unsure than to take a guess.

I was wondering if you would mind revisiting how accuracy is calculated for the teams. There is one team with an accuracy of over 100%, while my team's accuracy seems suspiciously low.
11) Message boards : Image and Video Discussion : Still something wrong with Validator? (Message 1732)

Actually, this video does correctly validate with the new validation algorithm. The algorithm does not look at each set of marks in total, but instead looks at the marks for each field. So, for instance, for Parent Leaves Nest the marks are No, No, and Unsure. This yields a No result for that field.

After analyzing each field in this way, the validator checks to see if any viewer has marked the video with all the "majority rules" marks. In this case, DoctorNow's observation matches the majority for every field so his observation becomes the Canonical observation against which all other observations are compared.

This is an example of how the new validator works when no two observations completely match each other.

No! Submit is that far away from other buttons, you cannot misclick.

I can recall a time or two when I clicked on Submit without meaning to. I mark the video while I'm watching it, clicking Submit after the video finishes, but once or twice I made my initial marks and then went down and immediately clicked Submit without intending to.

I think the reason some people want an "Are you Sure?" option on Submit has to do with giving themselves an extra opportunity to realize that their markings are not correct. I personally don't think it would help, as we would soon just get into the habit of doing a double-click on Submit.

Team SETI.USA is showing an accuracy of 113.75. Remarkable !

It's a side effect from getting credit for invalid videos. Good job!

These most likely haven't been re-validated because they require another observation.

Yes, that is likely. But some of them already have 5 observations. In fact, N1030 - CH00_20110711_144505MN_CHILD56 already has 8 observations. Of those 8, 4 say Parent Absence = No and 4 say Yes. Therefore, there is no majority for that field.

With 8 observations, will it ever be looked at?

Please reconsider your expert marking of this video (150.622 - CH00_20120609_030753MN_CHILD43). You said, "The video quality is poor. Judging by just this video, I can't say anything but "unsure" and even when I look at the datasheet, the fate date has an error potential of a few days and this falls in that span so there's no way to know unless you try to look at the next day and see if you can see better."

Other reviewers have acknowledged that a hatch event took place on 6/8. I don't know anything about a "fate date", but I observed the hen leaving the nest with the chicks. That aside, the eggshells can be seen in the center of the video just below the leaf that sticks out toward the left.

I have noticed some videos where I have a rating (Valid/Invalid); they show up when I filter the Watched Videos page. But all viewers have accuracy of 0% and credit of 0. In some cases, there are already 5 observations, but not always. For instance, 150.622 - CH00_20120603_125609MN_CHILD0 only has 4 observations.

In every case I've seen, there should not yet be a Canonical based on your current validation algorithm.

Also, the Watched Videos page would allow me to Report the video, so it would appear that one observation is Canonical.

? What your saying then is you can be absolutely correct with your Marking's for the Video but if they don't match the Canonicals Marking's your going to be Tagged Invalid ? Or at the very least you'll lose Credits & or Accuracy if you don't Match the Canonicals Marking even though you may be the right & the Canonical wrong ...

How can the Canonical be wrong? If the Canonical really is wrong, that would be reason to Report the video.

If the canonical marking has an unsure in it, yes and no will count as half correct.

If the canonical marking has a yes/no, then unsures will count as half correct.

Okay. When I go through my Watched Videos, will it be under my Valid videos or my Invalid videos?
