Interesting, I hadn't noticed the BOINC version. With charityengine users being overall #1 and #1 at CSG, I doubt they will be banned via a min BOINC version update.

Hi Everyone!

Sorry for a lot of silence on our end -- things have been quite hectic this summer! I accepted a new position and now am at Rochester Institute of Technology and busily getting a new lab set up (and having some students migrate along with me).

I'm going to let some of the work units clear out of the system and set up some new runs which should help fix some of the issues you've been seeing with bad workunits. In the longer term, I've started work on an updated binary which should also allow for the use of GPUs, which should hopefully allow the runs to scale a bit better without running into these problems.

I'll be keeping you posted as that comes along, but right now we're all just trying to get settled in a new place! Thanks again for all your support. The results coming in are definitely interesting ones!

I don't see anything wrong the the tasks. JUST BAD HOSTS!!! Please ban them. So, so many bad hosts. Easily at least every other task seems to have an error on it from some 'Anonymous' user that we all know is Gridcoin.

Are the tasks currently in progress going to be uploaded? Right now they are just stuck and it seems like they are just going to be abandoned based off your comment.

Hi, mmonnin,
" part of each individual project. There's nothing we can do about it"
You say, "we can do"... are you a moderator for this project, or otherwise on the project team?

Message 7581 - Posted: 9 Sep 2018, 1:29:09 UTC :
"By aborting units you are contributing to the problems ..."

On rare occasions I have to abort a WU, for various reasons.
Surely CSG can distinguish between a real compute error and an abort by the user.
If not, THIS needs to be fixed.

No just a regular user. And as a regular user, "There's nothing we can do about it" meaning the user cannot change the memory usage of the app. Your quote of me is out of context.

Some tasks just take several days to complete. Even on my 2700x some tasks take 3 days. The scheduler can't predict that. It'll just send you tasks to run for a a day. If you need a task to run then it will send you a task. It won't not send you a task because it may take too long. Its going to send a task to keep a CPU busy.

Run times and memory usage are part of each individual project. There's nothing we can do about it. If the run times and memory usage is beyond what you want to run then the project isn't for you.

The admin won't even respond to a direct email.

Going around and complaining on every BOINC project forum for things that are normal doesn't help either.

Started up CSG again on a host and 2 of 16 tasks were task _2 or higher. 14 of them had a bad host already. 87.5%.

1 Valid
4 Pending
812 Errors

99.4% error!

WIldlife is the only sub project at CSG that has had CPU work in quite awhile. BOINC has a wide variety of projects if this is not what you're interested in.

They might but I don't think the original hosts will get credit.

Yeah, no response to my other thread about the constant bad hosts that error on every task. So many hosts are all bad causing good work to be reported as bad. Most were Anon and with Gridcoin having such a large user base many of the hosts were prob them.

I've seen periods where no image would load for separate PCs at different locations.

I've had 2 very long tasks become invalid because bad hosts produce nothing but invalid results. Probably 30-40k credit each just wasted.

The list goes on an on.
13) Message boards : Webpage and Application Code Discussion : Excessive credit? (Message 7391)

It is not something that should be open to a vote. He seems to know the basic rules of BOINC. The credit here is quite obviously not in line with other projects. Sure, it is not easy to get all projects exactly matching, there are many reasons why it could never be that way, The premise within BOINC is that the projects should be ROUGHLY the same. As things are right now here, they very clearly are not.

There are MANY projects with wildly varying RAC. Some CPU projects a CPU can barely do 10k, another 100k. There is no Rule that RAC has to be equal for all projects. GPUs have an even wider distribution of RAC between projects.

Even with RAC being higher at CSG it's not even as heavily supported as some others so RAC is not having a large impact to other projects. Most people understand RAC is different between projects and run what they want no matter the points. Time to join everyone else.

I apologize for slow loading on the flights this morning. Our IT staff has been doing some things which I think resulted in this. Looks like things are back up and going thankfully. If I hear any more I'll let you know.

Now would be a good time to get anything straightened out. :) Formula BOINC Sprint event is CSG.
15) Message boards : Webpage and Application Code Discussion : [EXACT MNIST Batch CNN Type] Badges (Message 7331)
Posted 25 Sep 2017 by mmonnin
Is there a page that clearly associates the different applications with the subprojects? I am a returning user from the old (pre-CSG) Wildlife@home, and would like to dedicate my resources to that particular subproject. The DNA@Home app was pretty obvious, but the CNN/EXACT apps are not as much so.

Every BOINC project site that uses the standard webpage template has an applications page.

It doesn't say that it is in Wildlife though.

Could the deadline be increased? I allowed for work from CSG from the new app and nearly all the tasks went to high priority and interrupted other work. Some tasks have only about 10 hours before deadline. D/L about 3:45PM, deadline of next morning 1:42AM. They will all complete but I only had 0.5 days of work.

The deadlines are generated somewhat automatically depending on the size of the work unit. The ones that initially get sent out at the start of a search are really small and should only take a few minutes, that's why the deadline is so short.

What I could do is keep that the same except also have a minimum deadline of 1 day -- so the deadline would always be at least one day. Would that work better?

Multiple that factor several times or a fixed length. A several hour deadline no matter the length is unrealistic. Just got one with about 9 hours til deadline, just shy of 10PM and it's due at 5am. 32 for 32 interrupted tasks. 27 other tasks started just to be interrupted by other CSG tasks.

Edit: It was mentioned about keeping CPU RAC about the same across projects as like a gentleman's code. Same should be applied here. Short deadlines just make tasks jump other projects.

What are the 9 tasks? 8 CPU and 1 GPU. That's normal for some projects.
