And another problem is still not fixed: when you have made bird selections and the next image contains nothing, you can't press "there's nothing here". It then is necessary to mark a blind spot and remove the selection to make the button available.

The "there's nothing here" bug is very interesting and I'll look into it right away.

Well, after being absent for a while I thought I make some images again here, but I just found out that this bug is still not fixed even if you said you "look into it"... ;-)

will there be badges for "EXACT Convolutional Neural Network Trainer"?

Travis said it already in the post above:
This is something I've been developing for Wildlife@Home.

You get Wildlife credit for the app, so you can upgrade (your) Wildlife badges.

First time I now see that reviewing pictures for counting birds is possible...
After doing some I have to say this is without a doubt the hardest thing ever here, the birds are hard to make out of these (terrible) pictures.
Refer to the two white dots to the left of the pond.

Are those the birds I'm supposed to count or is that snow?

According to the species help it's nothing so far you need to mark, these two dots look way too small for birds.

If they are birds, how do I "count" them?

I guess that is done automatically. If you mark a bird it's called "Selection 1" and so on...

Edit:
First "complaint" from my side to this is that skipping an image is not possible, it always gives me back the same image.
And another problem is still not fixed: when you have made bird selections and the next image contains nothing, you can't press "there's nothing here". It then is necessary to mark a blind spot and remove the selection to make the button available.

Then you're missing the context.
...

Hehe, no, I simply interpreted it a bit on my own view to fit my need. ;-)
but are choosing not to because Travis doesn't jump at your command. There must be a lot of live, active projects that you refuse to run.

LOL, a funny nice jump to conclusions and a perfect reversion of what I really said.

~850 people ran SSS in the last 24 hours. That hardly qualifies as dead.
http://csgrid.org/csg/server_status.php

That's not the issue here. I also feel as if this project is dead because:
There is no update to anything here anymore - no development, no word, nothing.
I asked for an update to the image reviews about a half year ago - counts and badges were announced but nothing happened since then...
I have given up watching anything because of this. >:(

As to the distance, I'm forwarding this on to Susan for more feedback, but generally speaking if the animal is too small to fit into the smallest box size (i.e., they don't take up ~75%+ of the box) you don't need to mark them.

Ok, that sounds as a good measure. First I thought the box created per double click was already the smallest one but I noticed it still can be made a bit smaller.
Maybe you should put this also on the viewing page like you did with the other note.

[I think we have ~40,000 for ND predators (which hasn't been added yet), and in the order of 2 million for eider + snow geese. Not sure how many we have for the UAS images. So it might just be that there are so many images the bars aren't moving so much.

Wow, that explains it. That are indeed too much to show any progress on these small bars. Would it be possible to add tooltips with the processed and total images for the bars?

At least it makes much more fun and is faster than doing the videos. I think I have probably watched over 1.000 images - doing it whenever I have a bit free time.

While browsing through them a question popped up: to what distance should the animals be tracked? Sometimes there are only small dots to see and it may not be entirely sure if these are always birds.

Please review the Species Information before attempting to categorize the images. If you need help while looking at an image, there's a Species Help (as well as a limited Interface Help) button on the review interface.

Badges and other tracking coming soon!

About time that we get account informations how many images we've viewed etc. ;-)

Btw: how many of those images for each species are available? I see no progress at all on the bars on the selection page. Are there only very few users watching them so that nothing goes on or does this simply not work?

please let me know which operating system and browser you're using.

Probably not OS-, but more browser-related I think.
Win 7 and Firefox (45.0.1) here.

Nice images, finally something to do again here - these can be done much quicker than videos. :-)
Although it's quite hard with images to determine if these birds are sitting on nest(s) or simply around...

I can't click on "There's Nothing Here" button if I submit some image report(s).

As long as this bug isn't fixed I found out that you can bypass it by creating a box and deleting it. Then the button is available again.

There is nothing here. I can't watch the video

You can either skip that or mark it with the event "video error" from start to end.
It can happen from time to time that there are parts like this.

Ok, and here they are:
...

Coming back after a half year and I have to see that the new badges I provided are still not implemented, WTF...?!?
Four users could have one of these badges, already two are over the limit I made with these, unbelievable - you surely have time for watching birds. ;-)
Congrats to JumpinJohnny and Steve. (Unfortunately) There will be no more badges (from me).
14) Message boards : Webpage and Application Code Discussion : badge page issue (Message 5863)
Posted 8 Sep 2015 by Profile DoctorNow
Well, looking at the parent directory http://csgrid.org/csg/wildlife/wildlife_badges/ shows that the teal bronze-file is way bigger than the others. And directly clicking on it (in Firefox) gives me this:
"The image *.* cannot be displayed because it contains errors"
Judging from the size it could be the case that this could have been a bmp before and was only renamed to a jpg. Unfortunately some browsers cannot handle such a mixing of formats. ;-)

And I almost hate to ask since I believe I don't get an answer anyway, but: why are my new made badges still not on the badge page?

I found two issues

And there are even more since it appears to me that there are duplicate badges. Mentioned this already here a month ago but still no update - and the new badges I introduced are not yet included also... ;-)
16) Message boards : Image and Video Discussion : Researcher hide the nest (Message 5814)
Posted 25 Aug 2015 by Profile DoctorNow
BTW, this is one of the worst nests. A few hours ago, nest is not visible too, It took me several hours for correction. At first time, I was thinking that the bird is still on nest. I corrected 5 next videos later (in review page), because I mark it as "on nest". (This is note for JumpinJohnny, DoctorNow, ecologyfund,... I hope that I save your hours of rewatching and analysis of this nest :) )

Luckily I didn't have much of this videos yet (and couldn't watch much the last days anyway), and the ones I got were rather easy because I got the ones were the badger plunders the nest - it was the first time at all I got videos with a predator. I was so happy... :-D ;-)
Anyway, I find it somewhat curious that all of the teal nests are hard covered. Either this bird is searching for such places or it is intention to make us a hard time. ;-)

I'd like to do some work on the below, perhaps this would be possible?.

I'm not sure but I don't think Bengal Tigers, which are you obviously referring, are resident in North Dakota. That's where this project is hosted. It would probably take a lot of money and work to get videos from this species... and it probably would be a "little bit" dangerous I assume.

Are other species in wildlife@home critically endangered?

See the short descriptions of the birds. Terns and plovers are both listed as endangered/threatened.

That's a real advantage of the long videos - the chance to find clues for activity and/or presence is higher as with the small ones we had at the beginning of the project. THAT was a PITA sometimes...

Oh, I see, there was a word missing in my sentence, marked bold now. Can be a BIG difference in meaning without. ;-)

The "Event validation" does seem hopeless without more video watchers. :(

Hmm, how much do you think you have still to be validated?
I wonder since I recently got some tern and plover videos which I was the first!
I have a growing number of events in pending and my count doesn't increase much...

Steve Hawker wrote:
I haven't bothered with the teals because even in the picture when the expert says the bird was on nest, I couldn't see it.

Yeah, they're not moving much, similar to the grouses. First time I watched a teal video I got it wrong also since it didn't move the entire time, even if the video was long.
But: when you finally found something to determine if it's there or not you can (hopefully if it isn't already validated from others) go on from one video directly to another and you'll always know that you're correct.

An actual one frame per second viewer would be brilliant.

Yeah, I wished for that already as I started with the project years ago. For some events a frame-to-frame watch could be really helpful. But for the validation process it's apparently not necessary since it doesn't compare "milli"seconds.
There is of course the possibility to copy and load the video URL into an appropriate video player for watching, but the double loading takes time, especially when you don't have a very fast internet connection. ;-)

After the new video watching system was started,(last December),

Last december? That can't be true, I was away at least one and a half year and this new system with the long videos (and events) was already introduced the time I left.
But maybe something changed since then (again) and progressed, didn't follow everything of the forum here, though I did read from time to time. Never mind that, not important.
Have to admit I did not look at the timestamp from when the users watched the mentioned video. But it's a bit surprising to me that some videos - which normally should have been validated already - are still around there. Does only show how less really interested users are here...
