So I've been trying to come up with a method to reimburse users for the "monster" workunits that some of you have been experiencing. Unfortunately, by the time these come in many of them have been removed from the database so there is not much I can do in terms of reimbursing individual users for that work lost.

That being said, what I'm going to do is on this coming monday, May 8th, I'll provide a reimbursement to each user with credit from the "EXACT MNIST Convolutional Neural Network Trainer" application. I'll provide a one time award to everyone for 15% of the credit they've generated by that application. This was the best I could come up with as the users who experienced the most "monster" workunits also would have crunched the most workunits as a whole.

That being said, if you're experiencing some workunits from the "EXACT MNIST Convolutional Neural Network Trainer" application that are seeing pathologically long runtimes (multiple days), please feel free to abort them, or any workunits that won't be completed before Monday, May 8th for that matter. After the 8th I will still leave the validator up and going for this application to collect any stragglers, but this award will be one time only based on credit for that application as it stands on Monday.

Sorry for all the trouble these have caused and I hope this is a reasonable solution!

Thanks Travis, I just aborted another couple, one had been running for 91 hours with 11 to go.

The system still shows that I have one I have not returned, it was on my Windows XP machine that has stopped talking to your project since the SSL certificate thing happened, it got lost when I tried to get it talking by updating BOINC from 6.12.43 to 7.4.25 through 3 steps.
However it did not fix the problem and that computer can no longer contact your project at all (this is in another thread) so the WU got lost after it had finished and couldn't upload the result, it had run for 55 hours.

Thanks for posting this!

15% wouldn't really do in my case I am thinking, at least if I let these run to completion. I had some 10-16 day ones, but the two that are still running will be over 30 days before they are completed. With your advice, I will be aborting them and just chalk the 9-10 days each has been running up to experience. :-)

Thanks again for the heads-up. May I humbly suggest pushing a notice out to the BOINC clients when something like this happens, if that is possible?

All the best!

Yup, I'll make a news post (which I think goes out to the boinc clients?) when I do the reimbursement. Just waiting on a few more straggling workunits to come in.
