Hi everybody! My name's Marshall, and I'm a new graduate student helping out on the Wildlife@Home project.

My first responsibility has been the creation of an image review interface for a few projects that we're working on, including trailcam and unmanned aerial images from the Hudson Bay area in Canada.

You can click "Review Images" on the Wildlife@Home main page, or you can go directly to the Image Selector.

Please note, depending on the size of your monitor, the full image may not be shown. You'll see a dotted-line for areas that you can scroll over to, but I'll be tweaking the interface to make it more obvious and include more information on the interface.

Please review the Species Information before attempting to categorize the images. If you need help while looking at an image, there's a Species Help (as well as a limited Interface Help) button on the review interface.

Badges and other tracking coming soon!

Have fun,
Marshall

Hi,
I can't click on "There's Nothing Here" button if I submit some image report(s).

And another thing - Wildlife video interface saving not-finished work continuously. If I leave computer, I can continue later at the same video with previously saved events. Can you implement this feature?

Thanks.

Nice images, finally something to do again here - these can be done much quicker than videos. :-)
Although it's quite hard with images to determine if these birds are sitting on nest(s) or simply around...

I can't click on "There's Nothing Here" button if I submit some image report(s).

As long as this bug isn't fixed I found out that you can bypass it by creating a box and deleting it. Then the button is available again.

Very interesting, I'll take a look into this and see why it wouldn't be active initially.

If anyone encounters this bug, please let me know which operating system and browser you're using so I can try to isolate it. I haven't seen this particular bug yet.

Probably not OS-, but more browser-related I think.
Win 7 and Firefox (45.0.1) here.

The wildlife video interface should be saving unfinished work. Did it stop doing that?

Or are you talking about the image interface?

I'm talking about new image interface. If I close browser, Image interface NOT load last picture later. Interface load another random picture.

Video interface features are great and works! Can you apply the same features to image interface? I mean saving unfinished work and loading next image from the same camera?

Please review the Species Information before attempting to categorize the images. If you need help while looking at an image, there's a Species Help (as well as a limited Interface Help) button on the review interface.

Badges and other tracking coming soon!

About time that we get account informations how many images we've viewed etc. ;-)

Btw: how many of those images for each species are available? I see no progress at all on the bars on the selection page. Are there only very few users watching them so that nothing goes on or does this simply not work?

I think we have ~40,000 for ND predators (which hasn't been added yet), and in the order of 2 million for eider + snow geese. Not sure how many we have for the UAS images. So it might just be that there are so many images the bars aren't moving so much. :) That and validation isn't up and going yet...

Marshall's been trying to get something set up for Susan's students this last week but with any luck we'll get the progress bars updated soon (along with badges and top lists).

Wow, that explains it. That are indeed too much to show any progress on these small bars. Would it be possible to add tooltips with the processed and total images for the bars?

At least it makes much more fun and is faster than doing the videos. I think I have probably watched over 1.000 images - doing it whenever I have a bit free time.

While browsing through them a question popped up: to what distance should the animals be tracked? Sometimes there are only small dots to see and it may not be entirely sure if these are always birds.

We'll try and get the progress bars up and going shortly. There won't be much to show in terms of progress until we get validation up and going anyhow... There's two weeks left in the semester for me (and this one has been a nightmare in terms of teaching overload) -- so once it's over I'll definitely have a whole lot more time to devote to getting things updated in a timely fashion.

As to the distance, I'm forwarding this on to Susan for more feedback, but generally speaking if the animal is too small to fit into the smallest box size (i.e., they don't take up ~75%+ of the box) you don't need to mark them.

Ok, that sounds as a good measure. First I thought the box created per double click was already the smallest one but I noticed it still can be made a bit smaller.
Maybe you should put this also on the viewing page like you did with the other note.

I agree with Travis if it is just a little dot, it won't help much. One of the key things here is to box what you can effectively determine it as a specific species. If it is so small that it doesn't really fill up the smallest box, it won't be as informative for our computer vision algorithms. These algorithms are then being tested from the aerial photos as well as the trail cameras on the ground. A key thing from the trail cameras is the diversity of species we can have in those so that we can create a wide training set from a variety of species, as well as potentially use some of the other species past geese and eiders you detect to determine occurrence patterns on the landscape. From a biological standpoint, this could allow us to get a lot more information out of the imagery than just its original intent of determine what predators were eating the nests.

Thanks for all the help and great questions. Hope this answers your question.
